Pride Month is about so much more than rainbows, glitter, and parades. It is a celebration of courage, authenticity, and community, rooted in a history of resilience that began with the Stonewall Uprising of 1969. As we honor the progress that has been made, we must also recognize the challenges LGBTQ+ individuals continue to face—particularly young people who experience rejection, housing instability, and barriers to care.

There is a growing disconnect between wanting a job and being prepared to do the work. In human services especially, where relationships are the foundation, we are seeing gaps in accountability, follow-through, and readiness that can no longer be ignored.

Volunteers are not “extra”—they are essential. This National Volunteer Month, we’re honoring those who give their time and inviting you to share your “why” and join us in building something meaningful.

How do you measure a year? At Meryl’s Safe Haven, we measure it in courage, in late-night conversations, in lease signings, in hard truths, in healing, and in love that shows up long after February 14th has passed.

This work—this organization—is a labor of love in the truest sense. Not the kind wrapped in ribbons or reserved for one day on the calendar, but the kind that shows up daily, in the moments no one else sees.

Sometimes the good news looks like a room full of people who believe in the work—and show up anyway.

People often tell me to take a break—that the work will still be there tomorrow. And while I understand that advice and appreciate where it comes from, it often comes from those who haven’t stood at the bottom of a startup. When you’re building something from nothing, tomorrow isn’t guaranteed unless today is handled with care, urgency, and intention.
